Centre Suisse d'Electronique et de Microtechnique


CSEM, Centre Suisse d' Electronique et de Microtechnique (Swiss Center for Electronics and Microtechnology), founded in 1984, is a private applied research and development center specializing in micro and nanotechnology, system engineering microelectronics, communications and life-science technologies. CSEM offers its industry customers and partners tailor-made innovative solutions based on its knowledge of the market and technological expertise derived from applied research.

In 2008 CSEM had annual revenues of € 44 Mio., more than 400 employees and over 100 individual industrial customers. CSEM is headquartered in Neuchatel, Switzerland, and it has national innovation centers in Alpnach, Basel, Landquart and Lucerne. CSEM is also operating two international R&D centers in Brazil and in the United Arab Emirates.

CSEM aims to be one of the best innovation centers worldwide, providing novel applications and solutions to our customers and to society by developing and applying our technology platforms in micro-, nano- and information technologies, thus adding value to the results of international research.

Our research activities – largely financed by public funds – combined with the research results of our academic partners, help us to develop our technology plat-forms for the benefit of our industrial customers and our own start-up companies.

We are aware that collaborating with other innovation centers and research entities in the spirit of Open Innovation is crucial in our globalized world. With this in mind, we have built up a strong national and international network. We work together with CEA/Léti in France, the Fraunhofer Gesellschaft (Mikroelektronische Allianz) in Germany and VTT in Finland. Together with these institutions, CSEM created HTA (Heterogeneous Technology Alliance), to prepare for the next generation of techno-logy. Our joint research strategy is based on extensive market research, and helps us to develop technologies today which will be needed in the future.

The CSEM research center for Nanomedicine in Landquart is active in four selected areas of applied research with high socio-economic potential: Cost-effective point-of-care diagnostics and robust medical sensing (startups Dynetix AG, SwissTom AG and SpectroScape AG); functional nano-imaging in the NIR, visible, UV and X-ray spectral range; micro cell reactors for cyto-toxicological screening and patient-individual drug regime optimization (startup 3Brain AG); and bio-selective surface chemistry (biophobic/biophilic coatings, surface functionalization, generic protein synthesis/peptide assembly and protein purification). The highly interdisciplinary and entrepreneurial CSEM Nanomedicine team includes medical doctors, biochemists, cell biologists, photonics researchers, physicists, electrical/mechanical/micro-technology engineers, nano-scientists and IT specialists.

Round Robin Experiment

Raman spectroscopy has already proved its effectiveness in many cases for medical diagnostics such as for cancer, cardiovascular diseases and infections. However, there are no standards in the different working groups, e.g. for sample preparation, implementation of the Raman experiments, spectra pre-treatment, data evaluation, etc.In a round robin experiment, the required groundwork will take place in order to define standardised Raman measurement methods, which will be fundamental for establishing Raman spectroscopy for clinical diagnostic procedures.
