School of Biology

The School of Biology at the University of St Andrews is one of the leading departments of Biology in the UK. Our 50 academic staff delivers the highest quality of teaching and research within diverse fields of Biology. To embrace this diversity, we offer several different degree programs, including Biochemistry, Cell Biology, Ecology & Conservation and Marine Biology as well as general Biology, and additional joint degree options. The flexible structure of our degrees means that students do not need to specialize until the end of their 2nd year, so there is plenty of time to develop particular skills and interests. Our research teams are at the forefront of many of the latest advances in Biology. There are four major research groups within the School: Biomolecular Sciences; Cell & Systems Biology; Evolution, Ecology & Animal Behaviour and Marine Biology. We also have several interdisciplinary research centers and institutes creating strong cooperative links with the Schools of Chemistry, Psychology, Physics and Maths & Statistics. St Andrews Biology is recognized as a center of excellence at an international level and is involved in many ongoing trans-national research programs. The School of Biology provides a unique and supportive environment for scholarship amid a beautiful setting for university life.

Round Robin Experiment

Raman spectroscopy has already proved its effectiveness in many cases for medical diagnostics such as for cancer, cardiovascular diseases and infections. However, there are no standards in the different working groups, e.g. for sample preparation, implementation of the Raman experiments, spectra pre-treatment, data evaluation, etc.In a round robin experiment, the required groundwork will take place in order to define standardised Raman measurement methods, which will be fundamental for establishing Raman spectroscopy for clinical diagnostic procedures.
