ICFO – The Institute of Photonic Sciences, a centre based in Castelldefels (Barcelona, Spain), devoted to research and education of the optical and photonic sciences at the highest international level, is offering a position to a well-qualified, highly motivated and dynamic young optical engineer (or equivalent) who wishes to enhance his/her career in a friendly and stimulating environment.
The successful candidate will be assigned to ICFO’s Research Technical Support Area reporting to the ICFO Advisor of Super-resolution Light Microscopy & Nanoscopy Facility (SLN).
The SLN focuses on performing continuous R&D in most of the advanced super resolution light microscopy techniques, providing access and training to all types of users in the forefront of microscopy for the most demanding biomedical applications.
The candidate will be involved in a multidisciplinary environment working closely with biomedical researchers. The candidate will attain an extensive knowledge in all the microscopy techniques available in the lab and will work in different collaborative projects where these techniques apply to different fields of life sciences. Moreover, he/she will also play a key role in operating and maintaining and even adapting the microscopes that integrate the SLN Lab. Specific tasks such as: particular sample preparation, image acquisition and image analysis will be routine activities
of the candidate. This adding up to direct involvement in the experimental process design of specific projects.

Raman spectroscopy has already proved its effectiveness in many cases for medical diagnostics such as for cancer, cardiovascular diseases and infections. However, there are no standards in the different working groups, e.g. for sample preparation, implementation of the Raman experiments, spectra pre-treatment, data evaluation, etc.In a round robin experiment, the required groundwork will take place in order to define standardised Raman measurement methods, which will be fundamental for establishing Raman spectroscopy for clinical diagnostic procedures.
